Recalling childhood memories of snipping shoots in the neighbor’s garden or enduring dad’s garden chores may evoke mixed feelings, but those experiences often sow the seeds of a lifelong love for gardening. Getting children interested in gardening doesn’t have to be a daunting task; in fact, it can be a rewarding and educational experience for both parent and child. Here are some simple suggestions for introducing kids to the joys of gardening:
1. Start Indoors:
Begin by letting kids care for indoor plants. Allowing them to water houseplants and participate in repotting activities instills an early appreciation for plants and their care. This foundational knowledge forms the basis for future gardening endeavors.
2. Choose Seeds Together:
Visit a local store or nursery with your child and let them pick out seeds for planting. Guide their choices to something manageable and seasonal, such as marigolds or petunias for outdoor gardens, or geraniums for indoor plantings.
3. Gather Tools:
Involve your child in gathering the necessary tools and materials for planting. These may include seeds, an egg carton, planting soil mix, a spray bottle for misting, and plastic wrap to cover the egg carton.
4. Planting Method:
Guide your child through the planting process, allowing them to take the lead. Help them make a damp soil mix and fill the segments of the egg carton. Have them create holes or depressions in the soil, place seeds inside, and cover them with soil. Mist the tray and loosely cover it with plastic wrap.
5. Care and Observation:
Place the plastic-wrapped tray in a dark cupboard and encourage your child to check regularly and keep the soil moist. Once the seeds sprout, transfer them to individual flowerpots. Emphasize the importance of ongoing care and observation, teaching them to check on their plants regularly and provide the necessary care.
By involving children in the gardening process from start to finish, you not only nurture their interest in nature but also instill valuable skills and responsibilities. Gardening becomes more than just a hobby—it becomes a journey of discovery, creativity, and appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. So roll up your sleeves, grab some seeds, and let the gardening adventures begin!
