Modern Indigenous — Blended

Modern Indigenous garden, blended with the landscape

This Milnerton garden began with extremely sandy, silica-rich soil — conditions typical of the area. The client wanted a contemporary garden that still remained true to an indigenous aesthetic suited to this challenging environment.

We approached the design through layering. A formal paver pathway was paired with a more informal laterite path, creating a dynamic contrast. The laterite path serves as the primary functional route, while the paver path adds a strong visual structure and aesthetic appeal.

A key feature was the introduction of an elevated entrance deck, guiding visitors from the front gate to the porch. Suspended above the planting, it creates the unique sensation of moving through the garden from above, offering a new perspective on the space.

The planting design focused on massing and grouping, using informal shapes to form additional layered depth. We combined grasses, fine-leafed shrubs, groundcovers, and broad-leafed plants, blending a range of foliage colours and textures. This approach ensures visual interest and contrast throughout the year, even when flowering is minimal.

The result is a garden that transforms the arrival experience — drawing you in and revealing itself in layers, ultimately creating a quiet but powerful sense of awe as you enter the property.
