A long-standing and loyal client recently acquired a magnificent grand-lady property in the heart of Constantia. While the estate was beautifully established and structurally impressive, it lacked the bold character and layered atmosphere we had become known for creating across her previous properties.
The design brief was clear and wonderfully theatrical: “Colombian compound style — all the richness, drama and luxury, without the illegal activity.”
Fortunately, the property already featured many of the foundational elements needed to support the vision, including a sweeping entrance driveway, a central fountain, and a full tennis court. Our role was therefore focused primarily on softscaping — reimagining the planting palette, restructuring the pots and containers, and introducing layers of climbers and creepers to soften and romanticise the architecture.
One of the first interventions involved the extensive collection of raw garden pots scattered throughout the property. We regrouped and styled these in curated clusters, painting them all in a rich terracotta finish to create warmth, cohesion, and an established Mediterranean feel. Some pots remained beneath mature trees where they naturally belonged, while others were repositioned throughout the estate into stronger visual compositions.
Each vessel was then planted with large mature bougainvilleas and trained creepers supported by custom wire frameworks to create height, movement, and dramatic vertical interest.
The garden beds were carefully cleaned out and simplified. Existing plants that were suitable for the new vision were lifted, divided, and replanted en masse to create bold, confident planting statements rather than fragmented scattered arrangements.
A particularly striking feature of the property was the abundance of mature topiaries already established on site. These structured forms were carefully clipped and refined, after which we softened and contrasted them with ornamental grasses and more whimsical planting to create tension, movement, and layered visual drama throughout the garden.
The rejuvenation process also included an extensive feeding programme. Soil conditions were enriched using composted herd manure together with slow-release kraal manure to rebuild fertility and encourage healthy biological activity within the root zones. All pots, climbers, and newly planted areas were additionally treated with organic liquid feeding applications to accelerate establishment and recovery.
The remainder of the garden was replanted and refreshed, while the irrigation system underwent a complete overhaul to ensure efficient and reliable hydration throughout the estate.
Today, Nature’s Blueprint maintains the property on a fortnightly basis, together with a comprehensive seasonal feeding programme at the change of each season — ensuring the estate continues to mature beautifully and remain at its absolute best year-round.
